Resumen

The information provided by remote sensing platforms on sea ice thickness and snow depth is crucial to understand the changes that the Arctic is facing under the threat of climate change, and in particular to study the evolution of sea ice mass and sea ice balance.
MOSAIC offers a great to performing measurements with shortrange Lband microwave radiometers with simultaneous in situ measurements, which will serve as ground truth.
The experimental approach is the following: Three Lband radiometers (EMIRAD2, ELBARA3 and ARIEL) shall perform measurements during the whole year round.
Many routinely in situ acquisitions will be performed under the regular MOSAIC acquisition plan. All these measurements will allow us to improve the emissivity and dielectric constant models for sea ice and snow.
Moreover, other studies will be performed with this unique dataset: Study of the spatial variability of the sea ice thickness under the SMOS grid, study of the cold calibration effects on SMOS and study of brightness temperature of the Horizon. Which will benefit our knowledge on the SMOS acquisition and calibration methods for finally improving the final products.
